2. How it works

It is the time when our Club members and casual visitors come together to play social tennis. It is also a great opportunity to meet new friends and to have fun.

Since the number of players turning up is almost always more than what the courts could accommodate, we may need to take turns to use the court. One set of Doubles (uni-sex) will be played after a few minutes warm-up. Once the set finishes, the next four players currently waiting will take over and play their set.

There are Social Directors around and they will help assigning players onto the courts. Please follow their instructions.

Starting from Thursday 17 March social session will now run in 2.5 hour blocks with limited places so that everyone gets a decent amount of hitting time. Electronic booking and payment system will be used to reserve your spot. To book your spot please click this link below:

unswtennis.simplybook.me

Bookings can be made up to 2 weeks in advance.

Once you've booked in for a time slot, you are required to attend the full 2.5 hours session.

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior commencement of social tennis, no refund will be given for cancellations less than 24 hours.

5. General Guidelines

(1) When you arrive, please see one of our Social Directors to register for the day and sort out payment for the day before you start playing.
(2) If you were the first one to wait, make sure you're the first one to get on the next available court.
(3) In busy times we may use a "queueing system" by having a board for you to put your name down so that people don't jump the queue.
(4) If you have played and a person just arrived, let them get on first.
(5) When there're people waiting, get a quick warm-up and start a set straight away.
(6) While a point is in progress do not walk around the court. It distracts the players and a ball may hit you in the head by accident!.
(7) If you hit a ball over the fence, make an attempt to retrieve it immediately.
(8) After entering a gate, make sure you close it. That way, we don't need to chase tennis balls hit out of the court through an open gate.

6. FAQ about Social Tennis

(1) Q: How do I become a member?
A: Please fill in the club membership application form which can be accessed here and return to any of the committee members during social tennis.
(2) Q: What should I do if I want to attend Social Tennis?
A: book online on unswtennis.simplybook.me. Tennis balls will be provided.
(3) Q: What if I don't have a racquet?
A: Racquets for hire may be available at the venue but not guaranteed.
(4) Q: Do I need to be a member to attend Social Tennis?
A: No. You just need to pay the "Casual Visit" fee which is $15.
(5) Q: With whom will I play?
A: You'll play with players of different levels from beginners to advanced players.
(6) Q: Is there a coach on the court? Will I get any coaching during Social Tennis?
A: Since it is "social" tennis, there wouldn't be any training provided. If you are a total beginner or just have a little experience playing tennis, we suggest you enrol in a tennis class in which you will learn the basic techniques. The UNSW Sport & Recreation is running Recreation Courses for beginners during the university semesters. For more info check out their website here
(7) Q: What if I can't make it to the Social Tennis at the start time?
A: You are required to attend the social session you have booked as the number of players is limited.
(8) Q: How long or how many sets can I play when it's my turn to use the court?
A: If there isn't anyone waiting, you may stay on the court for as long as you like. If there are players waiting, you have to start a set -- one normal set with tie-break at 6 games all -- after a few minutes warm-up. Once finished you need to vacate the court for the next players to get on. At times fast-four format may be used.
(9) Q: What if I just want to have a hit instead of playing games?
A: Sometimes some players prefer having a hit instead of starting a set. In this case four of you (already on the court) have to agree on it. You may use the court for half an hour.
(10) Q: Can I play Singles during Social Tennis session?
A: Singles games are allowed when no other players are waiting for the court. Please keep in mind that if there are other players starting to queue up for the court, please stop the game immediately, and let those players join you for a Doubles game.
(12) Q: What if I broke my string? Is there re-stringing service available?
A: Currently we are unable to provide re-stringing service. However, it may be available in the near future.
(13) Q: If I encounter any problem on the court, whom should I talk to?
A: You may talk to our Social Directors on the court. Moreover, there are always Committee Members around. To find out their names and how they look like please visit our "Committee" page.
(14) Q: If I injured myself, where can I seek help?
A: Most of our Committee Members are qualified St. John First aider, and we also keep a full set of first aid kit on the site. Please notify us immediately in the event of injury.
